Nikko Suna refers to the hardest type of pumice from the Kanuma soil produced around Kanuma City. It is mined around Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is said to be harder than even high-grade hard Kanuma soil, truly representing the finest quality of Kanuma soil.

While Kanuma soil is readily available at home centers nationwide, Nikko Suna is rarely found in home centers, even within Tochigi Prefecture. It is expensive (approximately twice the price of hard Kanuma soil, and more than three times the price of general Kanuma soil) and difficult to obtain.

It is sterile, offers excellent drainage and aeration, retains moisture, and is extremely hard, making it resistant to crumbling. Therefore, it is primarily used in soil mixtures for high-quality bonsai, orchids, and wild plants.

Its high drainage and aeration, along with its extreme hardness, make it suitable for soil mixtures for succulents such as Haworthia, Agave, and cacti.

When growing succulents, the most common mistakes leading to root rot are overwatering or using soil with poor drainage and aeration. To ensure healthy growth, we recommend incorporating soil like this into your mix.
